Ben Shapiro Saying Retirement Is Stupid, And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'
Every day, somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on Twitter from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.
Each day on twitter there is one main character. The goal is to never be it

This week, we've got a lazy attempt at provoking Muslims, someone trashing dog moms and yet another moronic take from Ben Shapiro.
Monday
Dave Atherton
The character: @DaveAtherton20, right-wing journalist, edgelord
The plot: Ramadan, the month where many Muslims fast, started earlier this week, and David here took the opportunity to be rude for absolutely no good reason. He posted a bacon sandwich, and explained that this is what he's eating for Ramadan. Of course, many Muslims do not eat pork for religious reasons, so it's crystal clear that this is nothing more than a low-quality attempt to be provocative.

β David Atherton (@DaveAtherton20) March 11, 2024
The repercussion: It's perfectly fine for people to decide personally that they want to eat bacon, but the internet quickly saw this post for what it was: half-assed trolling that you'd expect from 19-year-olds on 4chan, not from anyone claiming to be a journalist.
David when you got into journalism, what were you hoping to achieve?
β JoΓ«l Grimal (@FFP83) March 11, 2024
I sincerely hope that you had a passion for writing or that you wanted to expose corruption in number 10.
Did a young David Atherton ever think heβd stoop so low for attention?
Is this journalism?

Monday
Eric Conn
The character: Eric Conn, Christian podcaster, pet parent hater
The plot: On Monday, X user Eric Conn took to the app with a take that he must've known would rub people the wrong way (and given the current state of the website once called Twitter, that was likely the point). Conn β who hosts a Christian podcast aimed at recovering "biblical masculinity in a world of softness" β told users on the platform: "Your pets are not your children... Just. Stop."
Your pets are not children.
β Eric Conn (@Eric_Conn) March 11, 2024
There is no such thing as a βdog momβ or βfur babiesβ or βfour-legged children.β Just. Stop.
In a second post, Conn added that he himself "enjoys dogs," but that it's possible to do so "without using language that elevates them beyond their God-appointed station." Uh, okay, guy.
The repercussion: Dog moms and other "fur baby" parents took Conn's post as an opportunity to share cute pictures of their companions, while other people wondered why he cared so much about how other people speak about their pets.
Whatβs the danger youβre trying to guard against here?
β Nolan Corcoran (@nolancorcoran) March 11, 2024
This is what it looks like when you are a Christian βleaderβ who thrives on controversy for engagement. This looks desperate.

Ben Shapiro
The character: Ben Shapiro, conservative commentator, multiple time One Main Character, social security skeptic
The plot: Digg OMC Hall of Famer Ben Shapiro, who has made a career of coming up with the most contrarian, bone-headed and aggressively offensive hot takes a human troll can manage, has a new opinion to make fun of. This time, it's about Americans working themselves to death.
In a clip taken from the March 12 episode of Ben Shapiro's Daily Wire show, he said: "No one in the United States should be retiring at 65-years-old. Frankly, I think retirement itself is a stupid idea unless you have some sort of health problem."
Ben Shapiro on Medicare and Social Security: "No one in the United States should be retiring at 65 years old. Frankly, I think retirement itself is a stupid idea unless you have some sort of health problem." pic.twitter.com/hpOzS7q4V1
β Media Matters (@mmfa) March 12, 2024
The repercussion: That's right. According to Shapiro, people shouldn't be able to look forward to the day they can kick back and reap the rewards of a lifetime of hard work. Instead, they should keep working until they are physically unable to. And, of course, social security should be cut because that policy is too woke for us wrinkly brained free-thinkers.
What a bozo and a clown.
i hate these mfs so much. they are advocating for increasing the retirement age, advocating to legalize child labor and half the country genuinely believes these guys have their best interest at heart. https://t.co/cfgkKOAiqW

Ben Shapiro's net worth is $50,000,000. He will never need to "retire." The rest of us Middle Class, Common Folk will need to actually collect Social Security at retirement.

Speaking of which, Millionaires/Billionaires are allowed to collect Social Security.
